https://chhayashinde.blogspot.com/2025/09/beyond-small-talk-impact-of-mastering.html
I have discussed about the communication as human attribute, communication types and more discussion about personal communication. In this article Beyond Small Talk: The Impact of Mastering Communication Types II I will discuss more about professional communication. So, to give preview to this
Types of communication:
There are two types of
communication:
1.
Personal communication
2.
Professional communication.
Professional Communication:
Personal
communication is the basis of professional communication. The original
personality is same which is in personal communication but in professional
communication we may pretend something to be which we may not be like that. In
the sense if any person is short tempered in personal life but somehow, he/she
may try to control its anger while in professional communication. Either we
call it professional communication or corporate communication. In personal
communication how we talk with friends that may not be like that in
professional communication. There are minute differences one should understand;
like the differences between Hi and Hello, when to use which short words, how
the verbal communication should be, how the nonverbal communication should be.
How to set our boundaries to our communication? How to protect our self-esteem?
How not hurting somebody else’s self-esteem? In a recent study it showed that
85% people in professional life are successful in their career not only by
their talent, technical skills, managerial or leadership skills but by merely
having the best communication skills.
You can refer this article from my blog site on initial corporate communication tips https://chhayashinde.blogspot.com/2019/03/corporate-communication.html. So, one should study, understand and implement the cautious communication modes in professional life. If you want to read more on professional communication tips you can read my these articles also from this blog site https://chhayashinde.blogspot.com/2024/07/corporate-communication-ii.html and https://chhayashinde.blogspot.com/2025/01/corporate-communication-iii.html. Much of the contents are being covered in these articles. So not writing again the same things for professional communication in this article too.
In personal
communication I explained the language problem somebody has, or lack of
knowledge due to lack of reading habit, lack of curiosity to learn new things,
these things are interrelated so the person has weak vocabulary in any language.
Due to weak vocabulary, doesn’t have mastery of language so the confidence to
communicate is very low. Vice versa low confidence
severally affects the communication skill. So, the remedy for it is now
communication skill is no more can be ignored. It is must to have the skill. After improving the personal communication
then having the best communication skill in any language. Then getting fluency
in other language may not be that difficult. This is a lifelong process.
Good, Excellent or weak communication obviously doesn’t depend to any language, but depend on the person how it develops. There are lot of factors associated with it. Even not only knowledge about any language or confidence but the person also should have zeal to communicate to others on necessary basis. Here i say necessary basis. Some people avoid to talk with others because they don't feel like entertaining unnecessary communications; that's completely ok. But in general in necessary communications the person should be effectively communicating with others. But some people avoid or not able to perform the necessary communications also. Now which is necessary communication that a person should be sensible enough to understand this. Apart from that the person should have enthusiasm in life to communicate on diverse topics with the people in his/her network. Or with the people he/she count on in his/her life.
First is like knowing yourself as a human being or a person. And it is very difficult thing. It is life long process. But once you achieved it to a good level there is nobody like you. And it is beneficial in your personal and professional life too. You should be knowing well, your nature, your stronger and weaker points, your sensitivity towards social causes or not, your aspirations, your goals, so your focus in your life. What you are looking for in your life. Whether you are craving for likeable, challenging work, lot of money, lot of fame, lot of recognition or true peace of mind. What defines success for you? What triggers your anger? Are you authentic or not? Do you give importance to ethical behavior or not? Or whether you think that there is something like ethics or not? Yes, these things matter a lot what you think, how you think in your professional life. Because you need to deal with real humans, with different natures, different mindsets on daily basis who can think like you. You should have better understanding of this. Like Aristotle said –
Knowing yourself is
the beginning of all wisdom
Aristotle was the disciple of Pluto and Pluto was the disciple of
Socrates. Socrates was one of the Primordial
Masters of 11 Primordial Masters in the World and an ancient Greek philosopher from Athens who is credited as among
the first moral philosophers of the ethical tradition of thought.
Knowing yourself is ultimately a beginning of a new
wisdom for you. And because of that you get to know your self better and so you
get clarity of your thoughts how you want you should communicate to people in
your professional life. In professional life most of the time it happens that
the employee is good in technical skills but very poor in communication. So
that person should plan a schedule for himself/herself to improve on the
communication skill. Now if I am writing this thereafter it is very difficult to
implement this goal successfully for anybody. Because -
- Human is good at giving excuses
- It requires good amount of consistency
- It requires sincerity with your goal
- It requires need basis motivation for you to complete this goal
As somebody enters in professional life obviously the work
gets piles up for that person and then the person gets lot of challenges to
complete this goal with the existing work. So sincerity and consistency is
utmost important to complete this goal. Then a motivation; now is there
anything like motivation? Some people say yes and some will say ‘there is
nothing like motivation’. But then how I take motivation as ? I feel that in
any situation what worst can happen that you think and in order to avoid that
worst what best you can do that is your motivation.
Till now in my professional life I have seen many people
who were not good in communication but they improved on it with continually
working on their communication skills. And some I saw if their communication
skills were not good then also, they weren’t successful in improving it. Again,
I think it works on priority basis too; how much one can give priority to it. If
the person doesn’t have good communication skill then the person faces lot of
challenges in their daily work as well as others face lot of challenges while
working with such person. Some people have so weak communication skill that
they can’t even say ‘No’ to the work which they are not willing to do it, out
of their overloaded work, cut to cut bandwidths or whatever. I see the stress
factor start here. But for saying; the person himself/herself also should be
knowing his/her strengths, weaknesses, limits etc. So again going to the
starting point of knowing oneself.
Here i want to share my one experience from one of my past jobs in my early career. That time I was working as RedHat Trainer for RHCE certification. In one of my morning’s batches, one Engineering student was there. He just got the Engineering degree from MP University. Daily when I used to conduct the class, I used to ask some questions in between. And in my RHCE batches mixed group of students used to be there some Engineering passed out, some corporates and some quite elderly senior managers. And sometimes the batches used to be of IT and Non-IT engineers. So in the training sessions some used to answer the questions and some not. There was this student who used to sit in the corner of the class, sit last and never used to answer any question and always typing something on Computer. As RHCE training used to be practical, he used to execute those commands on his computer with me like other students. In this batch 15-20 students were there so most of them were not used to be notable to me. But I used to see that this student after every session after completion of the batch used to sit in the computer lab for the whole day to practice on the Linux machine. And lab was for students only so me as trainer also never used to interact with them unless they ask me any query.
Daily I used to see him practicing there but I used to do my work and after that used to go from there. Then one day he came to me asking one query in Hindi and after interacting with him I understood there was serious problem with English language and so was talking in Hindi. I answered him in Hindi but I didn’t ask him that whether he has some problem talking in English language. So he told why he joined RHCE training and when me asking about his grade in Engineering something above 80% as well as his understanding of Linux topics were quite good though language was a problem. Surprisingly! So, I found him a brilliant person. Then he himself shared his problem that his English communication is very weak and he is not able to talk in English properly. So, he gets scared to talk in English. Till the time I am used to with this thing that some people have good grades in academics thereafter their English communication is not good. And he asked me to consult him for taking out his fear and improving his confidence of talking in English language.
By communicating with him I understood that his communication skill was very poor and if his English communication will improve, he will do much well in his career. So, I suggested him some book and told him to follow 30 days exercises given in that book. And I told him that guaranteed his English communication will improve if he will religiously follow the book. He said ok, thanked me for the consultation and told me he will do it. Then I forgot this completely. Even he enrolled for RHCE certification exam and later I got to know he cleared the RHCE certification also. But I didn’t enquire also because it was my daily job that students use to take RHCE trainings, used to appear for RHCE certification exam and then till the time they themselves don’t tell the result I was not knowing their result.
Since I entered in my professional life I am active user of LinkedIn. In between around a decade in my career in my projects the workload was much that time if I was not much active on LinkedIn then at least I used to be there for 2-3 minutes to check what’s going around in IT market. So like this once I logged in on LinkedIn, I got one ping on my LinkedIn account “Hi Mam, How are you?’. That time I used to be very busy with my project work so I was never finding that much time to answer random messages or mails so keenly on LinkedIn. So, I ignored it. Then after some days again I got ping from this person. Again, I ignored it. So after some days again I got ping from him. Surprisingly, I thought who is this? I checked the name, anyhow I was not able to recall who is this? Checked the location it was from US and was working in some IT MNC with Linux as core skill. After that I replied him who is he? He told I am your that student whose communication skill was very poor and you suggested me one book I read it through. Religiously followed that book and now I am doing job in one IT MNC in US and settled down here. As he told this the entire incidence flashed in front of me, i smiled and I became so happy by reading this. At the same time i surprised that the person who once was struggling so much to talk English is working abroad with English as local language in IT MNC with Linux as Core skill. Then I got to know he cleared RHCE certification also. I became happy for that too. Because RHCE certification is quite tough and it is not anybody can do it.
I believe that If somebody passing the computer engineering degree; entering in the corporate life and want to feel the IT professional pressure then that person should give the RHCE certification exam once in their life. It requires lot of dedication, hard work and better focus on completing the exam. The dedication should be of the type eat Linux, drink Linux and sleep Linux. It is not less than a goal. The exam is also complete practical exam of 5 and ½ hours. Looking at that person’s that time’s communication skill, I was not sure he will pass the certification. But he did it. I became very happy that he followed my advice and overcame his lack of communication skill problem. It gave me lot of satisfaction that it helped one life to excel in his career. During my training career I have lot of examples like this but this example I felt like sharing because this person sincerely and dedicatedly worked on his communication skill and improved his communication and it changed his professional life for the best.
In this
world if sincerity is matched with consistent and right efforts then improving professional
communication skill in not big deal.
In this article i have discussed about professional communication in next article to this series i will discuss more about some factors which affect in general communication skill.
